A variable species with several described subspecies. Of these Brachydesmus inferus velebeticus, Mrsic, 1988 (a junior homonym of B. velebiticus Attems, 1912), is close to B. subterraneus and B. Iikanus. According to Mrsic, Brachydesmus inferus velebiticus might be recognised as an independent species, or else B. likanus might be also a subspecies of B. inferus. There are many records from caves.
