This species was originally described in a monotypic genus—Alpityphlus Strasser, 1967. Fritsch (1998) synonymized Alpityphlus with Typhloiulus, but without stating any reasons for the proposed synonymy. Considering that Strasser’s description includes several diagnostic differences between Alpityphlus and Typhloiulus, T. seewaldi might indeed deserve treatment under a separate genus.
